About

Jonathan Hawes

Based in South Oxfordshire I currently manage large gardens in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire. I am professionally qualified in horticulture and I have over 10 years’ experience of plantsmanship and landscaping. Plantsmanship is at the forefront of the services that I provide, whether creating an immaculate weed free lawn or transforming a wild overgrown oasis into a beautiful garden to take pride in.

My website provides information on the services I offer supported by photographic portfolios of my current and previous work as well as testimonials from some of my current and previous clients. My journey in the horticultural industry can be seen below under work history.

Serving people is a large part of my job and also an enjoyable part. For me it’s essential that the people I work for are more than happy with the service that they receive; whether working to a specific budget or selecting materials that reflect the local architecture. Plants and gardens are my chosen profession and a passion and I put client needs and desires first.

History

I began my career in horticulture in 2006 as an apprentice gardener.

I gained experience working within an estate garden, maintained domestic gardens and completed landscape projects. In 2008 I began studying plantsmanship in depth.

During my studies I worked within the 167 acre world renowned Hillier’s gardens in Hampshire. I graduated from college in 2010 with full distinction in decorative horticulture.

In early 2011 I began managing a 7 acre Cotswold garden as head gardener. The gardens had recently been completely redesigned by Justin Spink.

In 2012 I was given sole responsibility for a 7 acre garden in North Oxfordshire. I completed landscape projects, grew seasonal vegetables for the house and I grew numerous Dahlia and Begonia for summer colour whilst maintaining the garden throughout the year. The garden comprised of summer flowering borders and extensive lawns including a croque lawn.

I displayed the garden to the public each June through national garden scheme’s yellow books.

I have been trading for over three years and I am delighted to say I have a small, loyal clientele.

Testimonials

Jonathan is a friendly, reliable man and an excellent gardener. He is highly knowledgeable about plants and their requirements and is always thinking of extra ways to enhance the look of our garden. He takes pride in his work and always ensures a high quality finish to his work. I would certainly recommend him.

Jonathan has been looking after my garden for two years, during which time he has completely transformed it – a new lawn and plants for the borders some of which I have never heard of. He is a very knowledgable, trustworthy, likeable young man and extremely hard working. I thoroughly recommend him.

Although I enjoy gardening it is very much as an amateur and with lack of knowledge. Jonathan helps me with jobs that I feel unable to tackle myself and also, with his detailed knowledge of plants and planting, gives me excellent advice and assistance. Very much appreciated and recommended.

Jonathan has been gardening for us for a year.  He comes to us once a week.  He has transformed our garden from a baron landscape to something I am very proud of.  He has fantastic ideas and solutions and we are very lucky to have him.

Jonathan Hawes is a very talented, pleasant and hard working young man.  He is always cheerful and very punctual. He transformed my garden from a virtual wilderness into a very pleasant and relaxing space.  The choice of plants he suggested have worked extremely well. I have no hesitation in recommending Jonathan to anyone as I know he will do a good job at a reasonable price.
